At my school, education is mostly about knowledge. It is about classrooms and classwork. It is about reading and writing and understanding and knowing.
I love this fact. Yet sometimes I think education should and must be more.
50 things to do before you turn 20 is a homework project I created with my Year 12 students (17 year olds).
Back in school after their summer examinations, not quite ready to start the new curriculum. We wanted to expand our horizons. Develop our cultural capital.
So we agreed that each week, we would attempt to do one ‘new thing’. We pre-agreed the list. Some I had thought of already (cooking a roast dinner, learning to fill up the car). Some the kids added (fly a kite, visit a zoo).
There was some negotiation involved as you can imagine.
Here are a few examples of what we came up with.
